Manhattan Declaration And Apple, Inc.

“Help!  We’re being oppressed!” is the constant cry of the far-right Religious Reich.  Crying “victim!” and spreading lies and fear translates into “Give us more money to support our grifter lifestyles!”  Accusing Apple of becoming Big Brother, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), and their cohorts, conveniently forget one very large and very simple concept: First Amendment free speech rights apply to government censorship of speech, not to privately owned companies deciding what ideas they will promote.  Apple has decided that they will not promote hate speech and lies.  They ignore the fact that everyone’s Free Speech has consequences in the public sphere — hate speech is free speech, but hate speech will never go unchallenged.

American Taliban's manifesto

The Manhattan Declaration (there was an app for that!) was promptly removed from the Apple apps store after much outrage from citizens who have respect for human rights.  Go to the above link for GoodAsYou.org’s breakdown of NOM’s latest email blasting Steve Jobs, and a reminder look at the vile, hate-filled document called the Manhattan Declaration, which the Religious Reich tries to portray as loving and Truth™-filled, complete with fluffy puppies and honey dew drops.

The basic tenet of the Manhattan Declaration is that the undersigned pledge to disobey any law of the land that they deem to be against their apparently very fragile faith.  It was drawn up by people who have publicly stated that they want gay people completely shut out of life, shut out of employment, housing, society, or want them imprisoned, exiled, or executed.  All on record.  Also, some of the undersigned have ties with white supremacist and christian supremacist groups.  Never be fooled what these people stand for.

Good for Apple, good for Steve Jobs for not bowing to the demands of the American Taliban.  A good lesson, though never learned, for the likes of NOM, the “Family Research” Council, the American “Family” Association, ad nauseum.

These groups also have zero regard, and mountains of scorn, for any Christians who do not share their hard-line stance.  There are plenty of progressive Christians, people who choose the “love your neighbor” and “do not judge others” parts of the Bible, and reject the “vengeance-kill-destroy” parts; they reject the parts that violate women’s and minorities’ rights and human rights in general.

But these are the Christians who are run over like road-kill, out-voiced by the extremists and fundamentalists, who have taken possession of the souls of many of our congressmen and women, unabashedly working to theocratize the United States of America.  When they’re finished with Teh Gays, so they think, they will then turn on the “lesser” Christians and other religions, and on each other.

They believe that they are above criticism, above reproach.  To question them, to fact-check them and point to their outright fabrications and demands for religious rule, is what they call hate speech.  I, for one, am all for their right to freely hate-speech because it gets their lies all out in the open for public scrutiny and it exposes them for what they are.  They have plenty of their own venues to display their views, but both Apple and their customers don’t want a part in it.

They believe that they are speaking for an actual deity — they are holy and righteous, and everyone else is evil and of the devil and hates god and should be subjected to their religious totalitarian rule.  For this reason, they will never, ever come to grips with the reality of the real world, but they will always have a job.

Pseudo-science And Religion: Drapetomania To Homomania

On their Facebook page, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) says that being gay is a mental illness.  It’s true because they say so!  Read the comments over at GoodAsYou; there are some excellent, well thought-out critiques on NOM’s pseudo-scientific claims.

It is really appalling to examine the lengths that religious extremists will go to justify their bigotry and hatred, and using their Bible to do it — I’ve discovered the term “drapetomania” (2nd paragraph below the Facebook screenshot).

“I believe …”, begins the quote by Louis J. Marinelli III, of NOM, and that is all it takes for a christianist to declare something as fact.

"I believe ..." turns anything into fact for christianists, with no regard for mountains of scientific data from medical, psychological, and social research findings.

Well, then what would one call the “mental illness” with the symptoms of refusing to be treated worse than garbage and having one’s basic human rights legislated away?  I think what I have, then, is “homomania”, ‘cuz the fantastic lies these people spew make this homo crazy-mad.

Physician Samuel Cartwright (1793-1863) coined the term "drapetomania"

In the 1800’s, when slaves had the annoying habit of running away from their masters, the Louisiana physician Samuel A. Cartwright “diagnosed” this “mental illness” and coined the term drapetomania.

His reasoning was that since God created some people to be slaves, that their NORMAL inclination (in caps, like in the NOM post shown, it helps to make it true), their NORMAL state of mind put there by God, was to be subservient to their masters.  Therefore, the “unnatural” desire to run away from their masters must be a mental illness.  Emphasis added:

Cartwright described the disorder — which, he said, was “unknown to our medical authorities, although its diagnostic symptom, the absconding from service, is well known to our planters and overseers”[4] — in a paper delivered before the Medical Association of Louisiana[5] that was widely reprinted.

He stated that the malady was a consequence of masters who “made themselves too familiar with [slaves], treating them as equals.”[6]

The Dark Ages vs. Bryan Fischer, Tony Perkins et al.

A single quote from the Dark Ages that nicely sums up today’s christianist leaders and “culture warriors:

What harm would it do, if a man told a good strong lie for the sake of the good and for the Christian church … a lie out of necessity, a useful lie, a helpful lie, such lies would not be against God, he would accept them. – Martin Luther [1483-1546], Table Talk, published 1569

And a few more that describe them quite well.  Religion today, as always, is used to justify any deed they do.

God does not work salvation for fictitious sinners. Be a sinner and sin vigorously…. Do not for a moment imagine that this life is the abiding place of justice; sin must be committed.

Sin cannot tear you away from him [Christ], even though you commit adultery a hundred times a day and commit as many murders.

Superstition, idolatry, and hypocrisy have ample wages, but truth goes a-begging. [Martin Luther, Table Talk]

Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has: it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but–more frequently than not –struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God. [Martin Luther, Table Talk]

Tony Perkins Of FRC Unfriends Facebook

Tony Perkins of the “Family Research” Council (FRC) is upset over Facebook’s response to anti-gay harassment:

“… Apparently, anything they construed to be anti-homosexual will be stripped from the site. Where does that leave Americans who morally oppose the lifestyle and want to help people find freedom from it?…”

Where does that leave people like Mr. Perkins (see below image)?  Well, I “morally oppose” the christian “lifestyle” of pathological lying and sociopathic behavior, but I don’t call for their fucking deaths, just the richly deserved ridicule and scorn.

FRC Spent $25K To Lobby Congress In Support Of Uganda’s Death Penalty For Gays

What we already know, here’s more proof that American evangelical leaders want queers DEAD.  Spread this far and wide:

From Joe.My.God.:

“CHRISTIAN LOVE: Family Research Council Lobbied Congress Against Resolution Denouncing Uganda’s Kill Gays Bill”

It’s time for the Southern Poverty Law Center to reclassify the Family Research Council as an official hate group, not merely anti-gay as they are now listed. According to the FRC’s official lobbying report for the first quarter of 2010, they paid two of their henchmen $25,000 to lobby Congress against approving a resolution denouncing Uganda’s plan to execute homosexuals.  The resolution passed in the Senate on April 13th, but remains languishing in the House almost four months after being referred to the Foreign Affairs Committee. Did the FRC’s lobbying kill it? As we learned last week with Malawi, international pressure CAN sway even the most virulently anti-gay government.

Below are three screencaps of the 20-page Family Research Council lobbying report supplied to me by Duncan Osbourne at Gay City News. Among the other items they lobbied against are the overturn of DADT and DOMA, which is to be expected. But it’s almost astounding, almost, that they would lobby the members of Congress against denouncing the death penalty for LGBT people. THIS needs to fucking THROWN in Tony Perkins’ and Peter Sprigg’s smirking faces the next time they appear on cable television to speak in soothing voices about the FRC’s godly gentle love for homosexuals. The proof is right below on official United States government stationery. The Family Research Council wants you DEAD. Glory! Praise His Name! Also: Die, faggots, die!

See the screencaps at JMG.

Look, these loving christians have made it no secret what they want to happen here in this country.  They want gay people exported, imprisoned, and/or executed … Peter Sprigg, Tony Perkins, Bryan Fischer, Scott Lively, Joel McDurmon, Andrea Lafferty, her father Louis Sheldon, Peter LaBarbera, Matt Barber, Matt Staver, the Wildmons … Jeezus, the list goes on and on and on and on … and on.

HOW can people buy into this hatred?  Sooooo afraid of thinking for themselves, soooo afraid that they might realize there is something really fishy about the whole relgiony, churchy thing.  Soooo afraid to admit that they’re entire lives are built on belief in fairy tales.

UPDATE: The Wa-Po picked up Joe.My.God.’s post, and the FRC has responded.  What utter bullshit.

FRC Panic Email: Lying About ENDA “Hiring Quotas” For Churches

Tony Perkins FRC christian LIAR

Tony Perkins FRC christian LIAR

I received my usual panic emails from the Family “Research” Council’s Tony Perkins.  I replied with my comments in red, below the fold.  I have emailed them on two other occasions and, of course, have never heard  back.  I’ll see how this one goes.

Other Christian hate groups like the “Traditional Values” Coalition are promulgating bizarre LIES concerning the passage of ENDA.

Substance abuser Andrea Lafferty of the TVC warns that if ENDA is passed, amputee veterans will be molested at work by crazed perverts who like to hump stumps – yes, the crazy bat actually said that.

Lafferty and Tony Perkins (of the Family “Research” Council) falsely claim that ENDA will require hiring quotas of “cross-dressers” and “she-he’s” in schools, churches and christian businesses.

Oh, and men who like non-consensual male/female frottage.

But, according to the text of the Bill, it specifically forbids hiring quotas; it gives specific EXEMPTIONS for RELIGIOUS organizations; these “Christians” are shamelessly LYING in their press releases and email blasts and letters to congressmen.

But, do not expect christians to be honest and tell the truth or dispense fact.  First, here is an excerpt from the ENDA bill outlining the EXEMPTION for RELIGIOUS organizations, as well as forbidding hiring quotas of any kind:

SEC. 6. EXEMPTION FOR RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS.

(a) In General- This Act shall not apply to any of the employment practices of a religious corporation, association, educational institution, or society which has as its primary purpose religious ritual or worship or the teaching or spreading of religious doctrine or belief.

(b) Certain Employees- For any religious corporation, association, educational institution, or society that is not wholly exempt under subsection (a), this Act shall not apply with respect to the employment of individuals whose primary duties consist of teaching or spreading religious doctrine or belief, religious governance, supervision of a religious order, supervision of persons teaching or spreading religious doctrine or belief, or supervision or participation in religious ritual or worship.

(c) Conformity to Religious Tenets– Under this Act, a religious corporation, association, educational institution, or society may require that applicants for, and employees in, similar positions conform to those religious tenets that such corporation, association, institution, or society declares significant. Under this Act, such a declaration by a religious corporation, association, educational institution or society stating which of its religious tenets are significant shall not be subject to judicial or administrative review. Any such declaration made for purposes of this Act shall be admissible only for proceedings under this Act.

Now Steve King (R) Iowa is spouting the “don’t flaunt it and you won’t get fired” b.s./ He says gays will start showing up to work in dresses to start lawsuits!  Insane!  And, IT IS A LIE.  It covers dress codes at work:

(4) DRESS AND GROOMING STANDARDSNothing in this Act shall prohibit an employer from requiring an employee, during the employee’s hours at work, to adhere to reasonable dress or grooming standards not prohibited by other provisions of Federal, State, or local law, provided that the employer permits any employee who has undergone gender transition prior to the time of employment, and any employee who has notified the employer that the employee has undergone or is undergoing gender transition after the time of employment, to adhere to the same dress or grooming standards for the gender to which the employee has transitioned or is transitioning.

Gays do not get fired because they’re “acting gay” at work!  That is NOT HOW IT WORKS in the REAL WORLD.  I lost a job SOLELY from a RUMOR about my sexual orientation (a 40-year old man, divorded for 12 years, no mention of women or a girlfriend).  When my boss heard the rumor, his attitude towards me did a 180.  Instantly, I went from super-employee to lower-than-dirt.  Losing that job almost caused me to lose my home, but what it did cost me what thousands of dollars and a round deep depression.  All that I accomplished there vanished, and in Louisiana I had no legal recourse.

ENDA will protect people who are fired for the SOLE FACT that they are gay.  Religious organizations are EXEMPT.  It cannot be very much clearer and it sure sounds fair to me.

Religious fundamentalists are opposed to ENDA SOLELY because of their blind hatred for gay people.  This is evidenced on a seemingly regular basis by their unashamed public pronouncements of their desire to have gay people “rounded up and dealt with”, etc.

I made a screencap with ‘red circles and arrows’. Click to enlarge.
